Through education, entrepreneurship, self-development, leadership, and the arts, we equip Ugandan youth with the skills, confidence, and opportunities to build meaningful futures. By nurturing creativity, critical thinking, and practical skills, we help young people transform their talents into opportunities for themselves, their families, and their communities.
A future where young people in post-conflict communities are free to realize their potential, shape their own destinies, and build resilient, prosperous, and culturally vibrant societies.
To break cycles of dependency by equipping young people with the mindset, skills, and opportunities to create their own future. Through education, entrepreneurship, leadership development, and the arts, we empower youth to build resilient livelihoods, restore cultural identity, and drive lasting social and economic transformation in Northern Uganda.
Founder & President
Our emblem-the elephant-is a classic Acholi symbol of peaceful resolution, deep-rooted structural cohesion, and leading the path forward with integrity.
"We are talking about a conflict of 20 years with the LRA... Young people grew up in an environment overshadowed by violence, high rates of domestic violence, and substance abuse. It was more of a calling to take part in an intervention for me."
Vienna-based conceptual artist Louise Deininger created the vision for GYCO Academy after filming her raw documentary, DNA of War. Since then, she has worked tirelessly alongside local development experts to realize this goal: transforming the mindset of young people and breaking the vicious cycle of economic dependency and cultural decline.
Building an empowered youth for a more sustainable, positive, and peaceful society.
Following decades of complex civil strife involving the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), an entire generation of youth grew up under the heavy shadow of economic dependency, limited educational infrastructure, and severe institutional barriers. GYCO steps straight into this baseline operational environment to rebuild foundational human self-esteem, self-efficacy, and clear entrepreneurial action lines.
Mindset transformation is central to the GYCO model. Through a unique partnership with Erickson International-organized by Austrian coaching expert Carmel Lee Paul-GYCO team members have been professionally trained as coaches and mentors.
They now support young people in building confidence, resilience, leadership skills, and a belief in their own potential-creating a ripple effect of positive change throughout their communities.
Empowering women and girls is at the heart of everything we do. Through education, mentoring, leadership development, and safe spaces for learning and growth, we help young women and mothers build confidence, develop their talents, and create opportunities for themselves and their families.
By investing in women and girls, we invest in the future of Northern Uganda.
GYCO connects international support with local action. Because lasting change does not come from dependency-it comes from people who are empowered to create their own future.
Serves as our centralized strategic leadership and fundraising core. Run completely by dedicated European professionals, compliance experts, and long-term executive volunteers to ensure high-integrity asset management while keeping administrative costs exceptionally low.
As a licensed NGO in Uganda, we work closely on the ground with local partners, volunteers, and supporters to deliver programs that empower young people, strengthen communities, and focus resources where they matter most.
We empower young people to become confident, self-reliant, and self-determined changemakers in their communities. Through strong local networks and partnerships with businesses, schools, NGOs, and public institutions, we help create sustainable opportunities and positive futures.
We understand the complex challenges faced by young people in Northern Uganda. By providing respect, intentional attention, encouragement, and personal support, we help them build healthy self-esteem, discover their potential, and thrive in a peaceful, inclusive environment.
We believe firmly in helping people help themselves. Through education, personal development, functional skills training, and direct mentorship, we equip young people with the structural knowledge, confidence, and practical tools they need to lead independent, meaningful lives.
